Ginkaku-ji Temple, also known as the Silver Pavilion, is one of Kyoto’s most serene and beautiful Zen temples. Although the pavilion itself is not covered in silver as originally intended, its understated elegance and peaceful surroundings make it a must-visit. Ginkaku-ji reflects the wabi-sabi aesthetic of embracing imperfection and simplicity, which is a core concept in Zen philosophy. The temple is particularly famous for its perfectly manicured gardens, including the meticulously raked kare-sansui (dry sand garden), where the sand is shaped into a striking pattern representing waves and Mount Fuji.
Visitors can follow a path around the temple grounds that leads up to a hill, offering a stunning view over the temple and Kyoto city below. This scenic walk gives you time to appreciate the blending of architecture and nature, a hallmark of Zen garden design.
