Sanjusangen-do Temple

Sanjusangen-do Temple, officially known as Rengeo-in (Hall of the Lotus King), is part of the Myoho-in Temple complex. This awe-inspiring temple is renowned for its 1,001 life-sized statues of Kannon, the goddess of mercy. As you step inside the hall, you are immediately struck by the overwhelming presence of these intricately carved statues, lined up in rows that seem to stretch endlessly. Each Kannon statue is subtly unique, surrounded by guardian deities such as the Four Heavenly Kings and the imposing Fujin and Raijin (Wind and Thunder Gods) at the front.

Sanjusangen do 1

Unlike many of Kyoto’s temples that focus on Zen gardens and landscape views, Sanjusangen-do stands out for its remarkable collection of Buddhist sculptures, making it one of the few places in the city center where you can witness such an impressive array of religious art. The impact of standing before these rows of golden statues is nothing short of breathtaking, creating a spiritual atmosphere that leaves a lasting impression.
