To-ji Temple

To-ji Temple, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of Kyoto’s most iconic temples and home to Japan’s tallest five-story pagoda, a symbol of Kyoto’s skyline. Founded in 796, To-ji was designated as a Shingon Buddhist temple by the monk Kukai in 823, when he established it as the headquarters for esoteric Shingon Buddhism. Its main buildings, such as Kondo Hall and Kodo Hall, showcase stunning religious art and Buddhist statues.

Historical Significance

In 794, when Japan’s capital moved to Kyoto (then Heian-kyo), To-ji was built as the “Eastern Temple” at the city’s entrance. While the “Western Temple” no longer exists, To-ji has remained largely preserved through centuries of fires, earthquakes, and restorations, holding valuable cultural artifacts and artistic treasures, including sculptures, paintings, and calligraphy.

Shingon Buddhism and Rituals

As a Shingon temple, To-ji practices Mikkyo (esoteric Buddhism), which includes rituals, chanting, and meditation aimed at reaching enlightenment. The temple regularly hosts night-time openings and special events, where visitors can see Buddhist statues illuminated.

Kanchi-in Temple

Kanchi-in Temple is a sub-temple of To-ji Temple and is renowned for its kare-sansui (dry landscape garden). This tranquil garden exemplifies Zen aesthetics, and inside Kanji-in, visitors can find a rare artistic treasure: works by Miyamoto Musashi (1584–1645), a legendary samurai and artist. Kanchi-in Temple was historically built as a research institute for Shingon Buddhism, serving as a study space for monks, akin to a modern university research lab.

Markets and Events

To-ji hosts two popular markets:

  • Kobo-ichi Market (Mieku): Held on the 21st of each month in honor of Kukai.
  • Garakuta-ichi Antique Market: Held on the first Sunday of each month, offering antiques, handicrafts, and local food.
