Byodo-in Temple, located in Uji, just outside of Kyoto, is one of Japan’s most iconic temples, famous for its stunning Phoenix Hall, which appears on the 10-yen coin. Originally built in 998 as a countryside villa for Fujiwara no Michinaga, it was converted into a Buddhist temple in 1052. The temple is a rare surviving example of Heian-period architecture, and its reflection in the Aji-ike Pond creates a serene and picturesque view.
To visit the interior of the Phoenix Hall, reservations must be made in person on the day of your visit at the reception desk. The tour provides access to the Amida Buddha and wall paintings but prohibits photography due to preservation rules.
Visitors can also relax in the temple’s tea room, enjoying traditional Uji matcha.
